Sabah Muafakat still exists, will meet tomorrow: Annuar

Muafakat Nasional president Annuar Musa has refuted claims that the NGO’s Sabah division has been dissolved.

In a reply to Malaysiakini, Annuar indicated that he plans to meet with the Sabah Muafakat chapter to address the issue directly and that the meeting would take place tomorrow evening.

When asked to confirm whether the Sabah division remained active, Annuar responded concisely, “Yes.”

Yesterday, several media outlets reported that the Sabah Muafakat division had been dissolved following the resignation of its committee members, who cited a lack of confidence in Annuar and the leadership.

The NGO’s executive secretary, Mohd Irwan Rizal, issued a statement today clarifying that the Sabah division remains active.

He explained the division would continue operating as usual and the secretariat would accept the resignations of those who had stepped down.

“Since the committee is still in its pro-tem status and some of the appointments have yet to be confirmed, these resignations are being accepted without issue,” Irwan said.

He also revealed that on Aug 3, the pro-tem liaison committee for Sabah Muafakat proposed establishing Muafakat as a political party under the name Parti Muafakat Nasional, with Annuar suggested as its leader.

However, Irwan clarified that the group will continue as an NGO and work with political parties that share its aspirations, principles, and objectives.

Umno and PAS originally formed a political pact called Muafakat Nasional in 2019 following BN’s defeat in the general election the year before, but the alliance began to unravel when PAS opted to collaborate with Bersatu in Perikatan Nasional.

Annuar, a former Umno secretary-general and MP, was expelled from Umno in December 2022 and formed his Muafakat group soon after.

He then applied and joined PAS the following year.
