Wee dismisses analyst's 'MCA can't do much for BN' claim

MCA president Wee Ka Siong has dismissed an analyst’s opinion that his party could not do much to help BN gain political dominance in elections.

He stressed that MCA will do what is best for the people and that party members must act with noble intentions.

"As long as this party remains strong, and is dignified, it will do what is necessary,” New Straits Times quoted him as saying at the MCA annual convention in Penang yesterday.

Wee (above) was asked to comment on International Islamic University Malaysia associate professor Lau Zhe Wei’s view that MCA and MIC, which have three parliamentary seats between them, would face difficulties standing alone.

He also said he respects freedom of speech and will not be taking legal action against Lau.

Following the 15th general election, MCA has two MPs - Wee (Ayer Hitam) and Wee Jeck Seng (Tanjung Piai) - while MIC has one with M Saravanan (Tapah).

Prepared to stand alone

The MCA chief pointed out that he had stood alone as the sole MP from his party before and is prepared to be one again.

"I will not stop until the people's problems are resolved. That’s it. We have gone through our time as the opposition and part of the government, even without a position. I have experienced it all.

"I have been a backbencher, a deputy minister, a minister, and now, even as an opposition, it is okay.

"I will carry out my duties and responsibilities, even if at times I get insulted,” he added.

In a separate report from Utusan Malaysia, he called on all MCA members to remain ready by proactively supporting the people.

“We have to show that we are always in the field and with the people,” he said.

When asked whether his party will join forces with Pakatan Harapan in the next election, he declined to comment.
