BN to discuss MyPPP return

The BN leadership will discuss the return of the People’s Progressive Party (MyPPP) as a core component of the coalition.

Chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi believed that the leaders of his coalition would have sympathy for the party.

“I know this party (MyPPP) has gone through ups and downs in navigating the political currents of the country and they have finally got a final decision from the court that the separation from this party in terms of legislation cannot be disputed anymore.

“For that, we will bring an appeal made by the leadership to see the decision made by (MyPPP’s) previous leadership,” he told a press conference at MyPPP’s 71st annual general assembly at WTCKL today.

Zahid said the BN supreme council’s decision, however, will be based on the coalition’s constitution, which demands a unanimous vote, adding that the issue could be resolved with discussion.

Riddled with factional disputes

MyPPP had two distinct phases - the first as a respected opposition party from the 1950s to the 1970s when it was led by the Seenivasagam brothers.

Its stronghold was Perak and it led the administration of Ipoh.

The second was as a minor party in the BN coalition that only won a single parliamentary seat in more than four decades and was riddled with factional disputes.

For most of the second phase, it was led by M Kayveas who was ousted after a factional dispute with the late Maglin Dennis D’Cruz in 2019.

Kayveas had wanted to take the party out of BN following the coalition’s defeat in the 2018 general election.

De-registration and reinstatement

In 2019, the Registrar of Societies (ROS) de-registered the party due to the leaders of both factions claiming to be MyPPP’s legitimate leader.

Last year, the Home Ministry ruled in favour of the D’Cruz faction last year, annulling ROS’ de-registration of the party.

However, D'Cruz died in November 2023, leaving Loga Bala Mohan as acting president.

Separately, Loga said in a press conference that his party had never left BN.

He added that he had contested as a BN candidate in Segambut in GE14.

“So, the point of the BN leadership saying that we left does not arise as far as MyPPP is concerned.

“I believe Zahid got some kind of clarity today. I hope he gets it clear that MyPPP never left BN,” he said.
