'Tengku Hassanal sets example how royalty should behave'

Terengganu Pakatan Harapan chief Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah has praised Pahang crown prince Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah for his uncompromising stand on those who break the law.

“He is clearly setting an example to members of the royalty on how they should behave,” he said in a statement this morning.

Raja Bahrin, who is a member of the Terengganu royalty, was commenting on Tengku Hassanal’s response to a Malaysiakini report that a Pahang royalty was allegedly involved in an attack on a road construction worker.

Urging the police to take action, the crown prince made it clear that nobody is above the law.

Noting that Tengku Hassanal’s statement had come within hours of the news report, Raja Bahrin (above) said this revealed that the crown prince viewed the matter seriously.

“The crown prince has been consistent in voicing out on numerous issues involving social ills and environmental matters.

“A sound education and moral background have given Tengku Hassanal the wisdom and courage to speak up on issues related to public interest,” he said, noting that the crown prince is following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps.

Latest case

Last year, Tengku Hassanal urged the relevant authorities to protect the environment in the state without fear or favour and to act against those who flouted the law even if it included the royalty.

“Ladies and gentlemen, do not be concerned. Do your duty diligently, I am with you. Do not accept bribes and safeguard integrity. If there are those who ‘jual nama’ (name drop about having royal links), inform me,” he said.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that road construction worker Alias Awang had lodged a police report claiming that a member of the Pahang royalty and a group of men had assaulted him in Kuantan.

The 44-year-old father of eight had been allegedly stabbed in the thigh and shot at during the incident.

Kuantan district police chief Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu told Malaysiakini that three men, including an individual believed to be the main suspect, were arrested and remanded for seven days to facilitate investigations before being released on police bail.
