'Left in the Dark': Mkini photographer to exhibit work at Nyata

A series of images shot by Malaysiakini photographer Azneal Ishak has been chosen for display as part of a Malaysian contemporary art group exhibition.

The Nyata exhibition at Fergana Art Space, Strand Mall, brings together 15 artists and three photographers with the theme “Being Conversational”. 

The chosen images originally formed part of a Kini News Lab special report published last year that shed light on efforts to bring solar power into Orang Asli villages, including in Kampung Sudak, Gerik, Perak.

“The ‘Left in the Dark’ series proves how there remain groups living in the jungle who face daily challenges such as the Orang Asli community in Kampung Sudak.

“It is important for me as part of the Nyata exhibition to tell this visual story to raise public awareness on the community’s challenge,” said Azneal.

“The overall exhibition also aims to rally solidarity with marginalised communities in efforts towards building a more inclusive society,” he said, adding there will be 37 works on display until Sept 15.

Other than Azneal, two other photographers whose works will be on display are former Malay Mail photographers Shafwan Zaidon and Sakinah Shahril. 

The remaining art pieces feature a wide range of mediums, including installation art, sculptures, paintings, mixed media and more, promoted as a showcase of the fluidity and versatility of contemporary Malaysian art.

According to organisers, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz is scheduled to officiate the exhibition at 4pm on Sunday.
