PAS grants Sabah chapter autonomy to form alliances for state polls

Ahead of the Sabah state election next year, PAS is exploring new political cooperation strategies to expand its influence in the Land Below the Wind.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the Sabah PAS leadership has been granted autonomy in determining this matter because they understand the state's political context better.

"I mentioned that we need to be more open. In Muafakat Nasional, we remain consistent with no issues, but in the context of Sabah, the state leadership knows better about the needs in Sabah.

"I see that perhaps a suitable approach for Sabah in the political consensus there is something that the party will carefully consider, as I mentioned about Umno’s autonomy," Tuan Ibrahim (above) said at a press conference after launching the 65th PAS Youth muktamar in Kerdau, Temerloh, last night.

PAS has an appointed state assembly member in Sabah, Dr Aliakbar Gulasan, who is also the Sabah PAS commissioner, supporting the now Madani-aligned state government led by Chief Minister Hajiji Noor.

Hajiji was previously aligned with Perikatan Nasional but switched sides after the 15th general election.

Therefore, Tuan Ibrahim said the political approach in Sabah is different from that in the peninsula.

"PAS in Sabah has an appointed assemblyperson as part of the government, and we support the Sabah government, but PN is different.

"That’s why we have our autonomy in the context of Sabah," he said.

Earlier in his speech during the PAS Youth muktamar, he also touched on how this different approach can be applied in Sarawak, while still keeping in line with the party’s stance in the peninsula.
