PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said the party needs to contest and win seats in the next Sabah state election.

Hadi said he saw PAS as having a future in Sabah as many of those present at the PAS Convention in Kota Kinabalu yesterday were young people.

"PAS must strengthen its position in Sabah. To implement this, we must win (outright) in Sabah or there must at least be seats that we win,” Hadi (above) said in a statement on Facebook last night.

He added that the last general election showed many Umno members and young people voting for the Islamist party to the extent that it was able to govern in four states.

Therefore, to enable PAS to helm the country, Hadi said the party must first win in Sabah.

“We hope that the changes that have happened to young people are positive for Sabah.

“We have a chance once every five years to elect a government. Give PAS a chance to lead, either through our seats or we invite friends from other parties to join us to establish a government to liberate our country fully without depending on outsiders," he added.

Sole PAS assemblyperson in Sabah Aliakbar Gulasan

Earlier in his opening speech, Hadi emphasised the need for PAS to have a seat in the state to represent the party's voice.

PAS has a sole appointed assemblyperson, Aliakbar Gulasan, who was appointed when Perikatan Nasional was still part of the state government after the September 2020 state election.

Speculation about early state polls began last year but now it is likely to be held in 2025.

PAS has fielded candidates in several seats in previous elections but failed to make headway in the state.
