MAHKOTA BY-ELECTION | Bersatu supreme council member Azmin Ali asked Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi whether Umno will establish a unity government in the state if it wins the Mahkota seat.

People might perceive Umno as insincere in forming the federal unity government otherwise, he told reporters at a Perikatan Nasional ceramah last night.

“Pakatan Harapan, PKR, DAP, and Amanah supported Umno for the last two years and they got nothing. Where is the spirit of unity in Johor?

“That’s why I challenged Onn, the menteri besar, to respond whether they (Umno) will establish a (state) unity government in line with the federal government if they retain Mahkota,” he said.

All 11 of Johor’s executive council members are from BN, selected after the March 2022 state election and before the 15th general election which saw Harapan teaming up with BN.

Youth support

On the Muda party representative at the ceramah, Azmin said he appreciated the support as 52 percent of voters in Mahkota are youth.

“The representative told me that he has received permission from Muda to help with the election work,” he said.

Azmin also mentioned that he will be attending Muda acting president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz’s wedding reception in Johor Bahru on Saturday.

“So, I think I will give her a few days for her honeymoon and then hopefully she will help us in Mahkota,” he said.

Last week, the youth party announced that it would not be contesting in the by-election in favour of strengthening its party grassroots.

On Sept 28, Mahkota voters will choose PN’s Haizan Jaafar or Kluang Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah as their representative.

The by-election was called following the death of incumbent assemblyperson Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, 63, on Aug 2.
