Police dismiss criminal record claims against BN's Mahkota candidate

MAHKOTA BY-ELECTION | Police have dismissed allegations that BN’s Mahkota by-election candidate, Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, has a criminal record.

Kluang police chief Bahrin Mohd Nor said checks turned up no such history.

“Upon review, it was found that Syed Hussien (above) does not have a criminal conviction record under offences registrable in the context of the Registration of Criminals and Undesirable Persons Act 1969,” Bahrin said in a statement today.

This follows a social media post by Bersatu activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, claiming that the candidate had a criminal history linked to an alleged fight.

However, Bahrin said investigations on the case had been referred to the deputy public prosecutor and subsequently classified as “no further action”.

Thus, the Kluang police chief said no charges have been brought against Syed Hussien or any other parties involved in the case.

PN lacks ideas

Commenting on the allegations, Syed Hussien also denied having any past criminal history and said that he would take legal action against Badrul for spreading false information.

According to Malaysia Gazette, the BN candidate said that it shows that PN lacked ideas in its political campaign and labelled the attack immature politics.

The police have urged political parties to conduct their campaigns responsibly, warning against the exploitation of sensitive issues such as race, religion, and royalty.

BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had also defended Syed Hussien, saying the candidate stood up for a visually impaired person and was never convicted of any crime.

Meanwhile, Bahrin also cautioned the public against spreading unverified information, emphasising the importance of confirming facts before believing claims.

“Strict action will be taken against any individuals or groups that intentionally disseminate statements causing public unrest,” he stated.

The BN candidate faces Perikatan Nasional’s Mohd Haizan Jaafar in a straight fight for Mahkota on Sept 28.

The by-election was called following the death of the incumbent from Umno, Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain, on Aug 2.
