Don't make us wait for eternity, Teoh Beng Hock's family tells PM

Teoh Beng Hock’s family has asked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to walk the talk on the re-investigation into the political aide’s death.

They reminded him that two months had passed since they met with him on Aug 1 to discuss the matter.

"The prime minister promised to discuss with the inspector-general of police and the attorney-general on how to reopen the case, but we have not seen any action from the police so far.

"The prime minister said that the police investigation will also study the Teoh family's request and refer to the Court of Appeal's judgment.

"So far, we have not seen the police thoroughly investigate the MACC officials who interrogated Beng Hock based on the conclusion of the Court of Appeal that his death was ‘caused by illegal acts of one or more unknown persons’,” the family said in a statement today.

Following the Aug 1 meeting in Putrajaya, Anwar pledged to reopen the investigation.

“I guarantee the investigation this time will be conducted fairly and transparently without interference from any party.

“In particular, it will consider the Court of Appeal’s views on this case on Sept 5,” he had said.

On Aug 21, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the police were reviewing the investigation papers on Beng Hock’s case.

The police were also seeking views and advice from the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action, he added.

Apply same momentum as other cases

The family pointed to the authorities’ swift and resolute action in the recent child sexual assault cases involving Global Ikhwan Services and Business Holdings (GISBH).

"The Teoh family praises the police for strictly enforcing the law to protect the basic human rights of children.

"We also hope that the police will reinvestigate Beng Hock's case with the same momentum, find out the real culprit and severely punish those who violate the law.

"In another two months, it will be the second anniversary of Anwar's government. We hope to see substantial progress in the investigation. Waiting should not be an eternal process," they added.

The family has been lobbying for a murder investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code instead of “wrongful confinement” under Section 342.

The Court of Appeal found in 2014 that Beng Hock’s death in 2009 was caused by one or several unknown persons including MACC officers.

The 30-year-old political aide to then Seri Kembangan DAP assemblyperson Ean Yong Hian Wah was found dead on the fifth-floor service corridor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam on July 16, 2009 after being questioned overnight on the 14th floor of the then-Selangor MACC headquarters.
