Selangor ruler meets TMJ: Advises royals to avoid social media disputes

In a meeting with Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor underscored the importance of unity and decorum among Malay rulers, particularly in the digital age.

“Malay rulers must work together as a team to face the various challenges faced by the people,” said His Royal Highness.

In the meeting at the Selangor palace on Tuesday (Oct 1), the ruler covered issues related to the royal institution and football.

Sultan Sharafuddin also expressed appreciation for Tunku Ismail’s visit and noted the significance of cooperation among all Malay rulers.

The sultan emphasised that the role of Malay rulers is now more extensive, not limited to religious matters but also encompassing contemporary issues.

He highlighted the importance of maintaining etiquette and good manners, especially when interacting on social media.

He also expressed hope that members of the royal families could be good examples for society by displaying commendable behaviour.

“Sensitive issues involving Malay rulers should be avoided from being discussed on social media,” said the sultan, adding that this is to preserve the dignity of the royal institution and prevent misunderstandings among the public.

Football rivalry leading to violence

Meanwhile, the sultan said there should be no more bitter rivalry off the pitch as it is important to avoid further violence in the Malaysian football scene.

“Regarding football, an understanding was reached that there would be no further disputes or conflicts that could lead to enmity and violence.

“Football is a people’s sport that has long united communities and must be preserved as a key platform for national harmony.”

Previously, a shocking incident in Malaysian football grabbed national headlines when Selangor FC footballer Faisal Halim, who also plays for the national team, was the victim of an acid attack.

The May 5 attack at a shopping mall in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, resulted in fourth-degree burns and treatment in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for about 10 days.

The incident sent shockwaves through the country, especially when just three days before, on May 2, Terengganu FC footballer Akhyar Rashid was robbed at his home.

He sustained injuries to his head and leg after the robbers attacked him in the night-time incident.
