Asyraf: Orang Asli in Umno supreme council a 'historic moment'

Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Mohd Nor’s official swearing-in as an Umno supreme council member last night is a historic moment for the party, according to Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

Taking to Facebook, Asyraf congratulated Ramli (above), who is also Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker.

“Tonight (yesterday) is a historic moment when he (Ramli) became the first Orang Asli to be an Umno supreme council member.

“This proves the party’s commitment to uphold and fight for the interests of all Malaysians regardless of backgrounds, including the Orang Asli,” said Asyraf in a statement after the supreme council meeting chaired by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“Umno remains committed to fighting for the voice and rights of the Orang Asli, giving them the opportunity to drive the nation’s success from within the political landscape,” he added.

Separately, Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi also congratulated Ramli as the first Orang Asli to be appointed into their ranks, joining others, including elected Umno wings’ chiefs and appointed state-liaison committee chiefs.

Ramli, 66, won the Cameron Highlands seat during a by-election in January 2019 and again in the last general election.

He was appointed deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker in 2022, replacing Pengerang MP Azalina Othman Said.
