DBKL fines 5 premises to 'jog memory' about BM signboard rule

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has begun a fresh enforcement operation against premises in the city centre that fail to put prominence to Bahasa Malaysia on their signage.

This comes after the authority found several businesses in Bukit Bintang having signboards that only feature other languages, violating the by-laws on advertisements.

According to DBKL's Facebook post, five premises have been fined to "jog their memories" about the rule.

"Investigation at Jalan 5 revealed that five premises have violated the law by abandoning BM on their signboards.

"It seems like they are more keen on featuring other languages. But it’s okay, we help jog their memory using compound and enforcement notice.

"Now they have 14 days to take down the signboards or face further actions," it said.

Saying they will ensure no other premises "forget" to adhere to the by-law via continuous monitoring exercise, DBKL also called for members of the public to assist their operations by reporting such cases to them.

According to a copy of the Advertisements (Federal Territory) By-Laws found on the DBKL website, an advertisement board must put prominence on the national language.

While it allows for other languages to be featured alongside BM, their wordings must be smaller.
