Some people spotted 'watching' shelters for rescued GISBH kids - Nancy

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri today disclosed that some individuals have been spotted “watching” shelters housing children rescued during Ops Global, an operation involving Global Ikhwan Services and Businesses Holdings (GISBH).

Uncertainty over who these people are has led to heightened security measures to protect the children, the minister said.

“We’ve noticed people watching our shelters from the outside. We are unsure if they are parents or others, which is why we must ensure these shelters are fully secure,” she told the media after the strategic collaboration programme with the state government in Putrajaya today.

At present 560 children are residing in these shelters after the Social Welfare Department secured a temporary custody order from the court for a two-month duration.

Due to concerns about attracting unrelated individuals, parents or guardians have not been allowed to visit the children.

“If everything is in order, we will release the children. However, if there are legal reasons preventing some from being released, we must keep them in our care,” Nancy said.

She further clarified that if it is necessary to retain the children, a reapplication for a court order will be required.

“By early next month, we will release them if it can be proven that they are indeed the children of the mothers claiming them,” she added.

Nancy stressed that all actions taken by the department, including the raids conducted in collaboration with the police, are in accordance with legal provisions.

“We do not take actions lightly because we want to avoid separating children from their parents,” she said.

In addition, she urged the public to refrain from believing misleading information circulating on social media that suggests parents are prohibited from reclaiming their children.

“Returning the children to their biological parents must be executed with utmost care and adherence to legal protocols to prevent any potential complications,” she added.
