I won't be surprised if PAS embraces DAP again, Puad says

Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi said he would not be surprised if PAS works with DAP again just to attain power.

“PAS has a track record of coming up with various edicts to justify its actions.

“The party has been pragmatic for a long time… just that it gets anxious when not in government,” he said on Facebook today.

Puad was responding to Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah who reportedly said the Islamist party would work with anyone for the sake of power.

Razaleigh claimed that PAS’ intention was clear for all to see and that it was planning to revive the Muafakat Nasional pact with Umno.

“PAS would never do anything that won’t benefit them. They just want to remain in power.

“When we set up Muafakat in the hopes of aligning our struggles to uphold Islam, PAS immediately ‘ran off’ with Bersatu once they attained power.

“In the past, PAS said one can go to heaven when they were working with DAP. Now, they call DAP a party of infidels. So, they are capable of changing their stance anytime,” Razaleigh said.

It should be noted that PAS, PKR, and DAP used to be together in the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat pact, which denied BN its long-held two-thirds parliamentary majority in the 2008 general election.

However, the pact collapsed in 2015 due to differences of opinion between DAP and PAS on several issues such as the change in the Selangor menteri besar following Abdul Khalid Ibrahim’s departure.

Join Madani govt

On that note, Puad said if PAS wanted power immediately, the party should join Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

“If you’re in a hurry, PAS can just join the Madani government. Umno won’t oppose it.

“It won’t affect us in any way… just Bersatu’s pain would exacerbate,” he added.

PAS has most recently been in the Perikatan Nasional coalition with Bersatu and Gerakan.
