Elephants damage cars near JRTB monument

The Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has confirmed that it received a report that a group of wild elephants damaged several vehicles yesterday near the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway (JRTB) Monument.

Its director, Yusoff Shariff, said the department received the report on the incident at about 10pm yesterday.

"Eight personnel went to the scene and chased away the elephants using the 'shoot and chase' method.

“About 25 to 30 elephants were at the scene at the time," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

Yesterday, it was reported that at least five vehicles were damaged during an elephant attack at about 9pm. However, no casualties were reported.

Perak deputy police chief Zulkafli Sariaat said all of the 14 individuals involved, consisting of drivers and passengers aged between 23 and five, were not injured.

They were all travelling from Jeli to Gerik and had stopped their vehicles when they saw the elephants on the road.

However, after a while, the elephants started moving, with a few of the pachyderms crashing and grazing their bodies into the vehicles before going back into the nearby forest, he said in a statement today.

Zulkafli said damages to vehicles included dents on the front, back, left and right sides.
