Gombak Setia assemblyperson Hilman Idham has won the position of Bersatu Youth chief, defeating his challenger, former youth wing permanent chairperson Akmal Zahin Zainal Zahir.

Bersatu election committee chairperson Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi announced that Hilman (above) secured 1,888 votes, surpassing Zahin by just 170. Zahin received 1,718 votes.

Hilman is reportedly a staunch supporter of Azmin Ali, who is expected to be appointed Bersatu secretary-general.

The former PKR leader replaces Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, who did not defend his Bersatu Youth chief position and is gunning instead for a spot in the party's supreme council.

Two days ago it was reported that Zahin was the winner, however, it was based on unofficial results.

Speaking to reporters later, Hilman said his challenger in the election will not be sidelined and will instead be given responsibilities to help further the party’s cause.

“Bersatu is a big family. As I have emphasised earlier, each individual, each member, is an asset to Bersatu.

“Our entire strength will be consolidated to achieve a greater goal - to win elections,” he said.

As for the Bersatu Youth vice-chief spot, it went to Muhammad Faiz Rahmad after he garnered 1,790 votes, defeating Izhar Shah Arif Shah, who received 1,287 votes, and Ad Adib Shaharuddin with 490 votes.

Muhamad Amerul will be the permanent chairperson, with Mohd Firdaus Zaini as his deputy.
