Bersatu Youth's Akmal Zahin Zainal Zahir has reportedly won the youth chief position, according to unofficial results.

However, there appear to be efforts from challenger Muhammad Hilman Idham's camp to dispute the outcome.

A statement attributed to the youth wing's tallying centre alleges that Zahin (above) edged out Hilman by just 76 votes.

A party leader confirmed with Malaysiakini that the numbers - although unofficial - were accurate.

As news broke of Zahin's reported victory, an invitation for a victory celebration was shared in a Perikatan Nasional WhatsApp group for communicating with the media.

Curiously, however, the celebration scheduled for 5pm today was for Hilman, not Zahin.

The invitation stated that the unofficial results "proved" that the Gombak Setia assemblyperson had won the Bersatu Youth chief post, not Zahin.

When contacted, Hilman said he would respond later as he was boarding a flight.

Incumbent Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal did not defend his position and is gunning for a spot in the party's supreme council instead.
