Proposed nuclear energy feasibility study not finalised: Fadillah

The proposal to carry out a feasibility study on using nuclear energy in Malaysia as part of the country’s energy transition efforts has not been finalised, said Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof.

He said the initial stage of the proposed study will look into whether nuclear energy is appropriate for Malaysia.

“(The study) has not been decided yet, only a proposal to carry out the study,” he said after a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a new Hanan Tower Building at the Hanan Headquarters, Kundang Industrial Park, in Rawang, Selangor, yesterday.

He said this when asked about the allocation of more than RM300 million under the National Energy Transition Facility Fund announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim when tabling Budget 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 18.

Anwar said the allocation was to meet the objectives of the National Energy Transition Roadmap towards reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions as early as 2050.

Meanwhile, Fadillah said the Kenyir Hydro Hybrid Floating Solar Farm project in Terengganu was a pilot project involving Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Petronas.
