1Bestarinet: MACC will consider YTL defence but probe continues

MACC today said it will consider YTL Corporation’s defence in its probe into the controversial 1BestariNet project and promised a fair investigation.

This comes after YTL, in a statement yesterday, rued about its reputation being harmed by accusations of misconduct over the Education Ministry contract, which it stressed was acquired through an open tender process.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said it is premature to make any judgment at this juncture as the investigation is still underway, including over technical disputes between the ministry and YTL.

“The commission is committed to conducting the investigation in a professional and fair manner for all parties involved. In pursuing this investigation, the MACC will adhere to due process.

“As the investigation is still underway, we urge everyone to refrain from speculation.

“We will also consider the defences presented by YTL. At this time, it is premature to make any judgments, as the investigation pertains to technical disputes regarding project deliverables between the Education Ministry and YTL Communications,” he said in a statement.

Azam added that MACC will work to expedite the investigation as much as possible.

Yesterday, Bernama, in its report, carried YTL’s clarification that it was awarded the 1Bestarinet project through an open tender process and brushed off accusations of misconduct.

“We would like to clarify that we have diligently carried out our contractual obligations to the government since the project’s inception.

“To the best of our knowledge, we have not breached any contractual terms or violated any laws,” it reportedly said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia.

YTL Power said despite its commitment to the process and cooperation with the authorities, the company experienced considerable negative public perception arising from accusations of misconduct by irresponsible parties.
