Despite PM's assurance, supporters still lodge reports: Lawyer

Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali questioned why Anwar Ibrahim’s supporters still lodge reports against government critics when the prime minister promised freedom of speech would be safeguarded.

Now targeted for a second sedition probe, the Pejuang information chief said he would answer any questions they had in court.

“I stated during my statement being taken (by police) that I would answer in court. The people have the right to air their views and give opinions.

“I said that a few months ago, the prime minister made the highest commitment that there would be no charges under the Sedition Act (for mere criticism of the government). He only said no to 3R (race, religion, and royalty).

“But we question Anwar’s directive because, until now, there are supporters of his who still lodge police reports against those who criticise the government and upholding freedom of speech,” Rafique told the media.

He was speaking after having his statement recorded by investigators at the Dang Wangi district police station in Kuala Lumpur, this afternoon.

The lawyer was being probed over his speech at the “Save Malaysia People’s Court Punish Anwar” rally in Perak on July 27.

The investigation was carried out under Section 504 of the Penal Code, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

In July, Rafique was questioned under the Sedition Act 1948 for his speech allegedly belling Anwar as a “scammer” over purported unfulfilled promises.

Cops should take note of PM’s promise

Meanwhile, Rafique today said he cooperated with the police, expressing hope that the authorities would consider the premier’s promise that the government would be open to criticism.

“If the prime minister is allowed to be critiqued, then in the event that the police receive reports from government supporters over criticism of government actions, the police then should ask them (who lodge reports) to ask the prime minister who said the government can be criticised.

“Now, those who are now in air-conditioned (government offices) with drivers while receiving high salaries as ministers and deputy ministers, do you not remember when you relied on the people and when you achieved your desired location (tempat diidamkan), or have you forgotten the people,” Rafique added.
