Fadhli: No one forced to believe Hadi's dream of meeting the Prophet

PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari has come to Abdul Hadi Awang’s defence after the PAS president recently shared that he met Prophet Muhammad in a dream, with the former emphasising that belief in it is optional.

He described Hadi’s recounting of the dream as just a “familial” sharing from a “father” to his “children” in PAS.

“When Hadi (above) shared his dream about meeting the Prophet - who commanded him to strengthen the unity of Muslims - it’s entirely up to you whether you want to believe it or not; no one is forcing you.

“Even if we, his ‘children’ in PAS, choose to believe. What’s the issue? Why are you so worked up about it?” Fadhli said on Facebook last night.

The Pasir Mas MP further clarified that the story was shared in a “family” context during a programme, and it was not intended to elevate Hadi or for self-praise.

Earlier, a video surfaced of Hadi describing a dream in which Prophet Muhammad visited his village in Rusila, Marang, and urged him to reconcile the disputes between Sunni and Shia Muslims.

The video drew varied reactions, particularly from those who oppose PAS.

‘Dreams prove nothing’

Former PAS syura council secretary Khairuddin Aman Razali said that dreams cannot serve as proof or evidence for any action.

In Islam, a good dream is from Allah, as recorded in authentic Hadith, and it may be interpreted positively, he explained.

“However, a dream is not evidence or proof for any action, including dreams of meeting the Prophet. Just as Mujtahid scholars may make mistakes in their ijtihad (independent judgment), dream interpreters too may make errors.

“If even (the Prophet’s companion) Abu Bakar Al-Siddiq could make a mistake in interpreting a good dream, what more others who are not him,” he added.

‘No problem if not against syariah’

Fadhli concurred that dreams cannot serve as religious evidence.

However, he said if what is derived from the dream aligns with syariah demands, then there is no problem with it.

“Calling for the unity of Muslims – isn’t that in line with syariah demands? So, it strengthens our resolve to carry out the demands of Islam. It would be different if, suddenly, the dream directed something that contradicted syariah,” he added.

Fadhli then took a veiled swipe at Khairuddin - who is now with Umno - for being critical of the issue, saying an “Umno ulama” had missed the mark.

Not the first time

Hadi’s mention of dreams about the Prophet is not new.

PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin previously stated that the PAS president is among those who frequently have such dreams.

In response to the latest claims, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Mohd Na’im Mokhtar has asked the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs to provide an explanation to the public.

“Jakim (Islamic Development Department) will issue a statement. I have asked the MKI Muzakarah Committee chairperson to clarify and explain the issue of seeing the Prophet in dreams,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama today.
