Hadi claims some want to be better than Prophet by rejecting salary

PARLIAMENT | PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang took a veiled swipe at the prime minister today, suggesting that the latter was attempting to appear more virtuous than Prophet Muhammad.

While he did not mention Anwar Ibrahim by name, the Marang MP aimed his remarks at a “person” seeking to display piety by declining a salary.

“Allah provided for the Prophet and his family, yet the Prophet did not use this for himself; instead, he helped those in need, including travellers (musafir),” he noted.

“(But) there are people who want to seem more pious than the Prophet, for instance, by refusing a salary - but that’s another story,” he concluded briefly.

Since assuming office as prime minister in 2022, Anwar has pledged not to receive a salary for his dual role as the premier and finance minister.

Earlier this year, he also returned his allowance as chairperson of Khazanah Nasional, claiming he was unaware he was receiving it.

Last month, PAS leader Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man similarly questioned Anwar’s sincerity, pointing out that even God permitted Prophet Muhammad to receive a salary when governing.

His remarks were made during a debate led by Opposition Leader Hamzah Zainudin, in which the Larut MP questioned how Anwar would sustain himself with no income.

Hamzah also jokingly suggested that Anwar’s only way to eat might be through prayers.
