PM to keep forgoing salary, cabinet maintains 20pct pay cut

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he will continue to forgo taking his salary.

He said his cabinet and political appointees will also continue to maintain their 20 percent pay cut, in light of the nation’s economic challenges.

In addition, he said top civil servants have also voluntarily turned down their seven percent pay adjustment under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA).

“Given the fiscal pressures and concerns over the people’s hardships, I deeply appreciate the government chief secretary and the Public Service Department director-general for their leadership…

“The top management in the Turus pay grade have set an example by voluntarily returning the seven percent salary adjustment they were entitled to under SSPA,” Anwar said in his Budget 2025 speech.

Previously, it was reported that the government saved an average of RM22,826.65 a month due to Anwar’s decision not to take a salary for his job as the prime minister since November 2022.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said in line with the SSPA’s implementation, pension adjustments will be carried out in phases based on a percentage of a retired civil servant’s final salary.

The Tambun MP has continued his decision to forgo his prime minister salary for the third consecutive year since taking office in November 2022.

Earlier this year, Anwar returned allowances he did not know he was receiving as chairperson of Khazanah Nasional.

“After a few months, the allowance (for meetings) was deposited into my bank account, and I informed them that I would not be taking it,” he said.
