Teacher forced my kid to buy insurance to become prefect, mum tells Edu Dept

The Selangor Education Department confirmed receiving a complaint from a parent alleging that teachers in a primary school in Klang were forcing students to buy insurance from them.

The department’s director Jafri Abu told Malaysiakini that the Klang District Education Office will investigate the matter.

“Yes I can confirm we received the complaint,” he said when contacted.

In the complaint, a mother alleged her child, a student of SJKT Simpang Lima, was told buying life insurance from the teachers is a condition to become a school prefect or peer counsellor.

However, the mother said she refused to pay for the life insurance because she could not afford it. She alleged that as a result, her child was not appointed prefect.

Despite this, she claimed, her child was still pressured by the two teachers - who are husband and wife - to buy the life insurance product from them.

She said she had also complained to the school administration over the matter but no action had been taken.

“As such, with respect I am urging the Education Ministry and District Education Office to take stern action against those who are involved so this does not happen again,” she wrote in her complaint, a copy of which was sent to Malaysiakini.

The complaint was also copied to Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and her deputy Wong Kah Woh.
