Gerakan president Dominic Lau today disagreed with Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria’s assertion that Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) recognition would disrupt national unity.
Matters on education should not be politicised, he told a press conference at Gerakan’s 52nd national convention.
“Gerakan adheres to the Federal Constitution, which serves as our guiding framework.
“For us, the UEC is not an obstacle to integration and national unity,” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today.
He also denied the claim that UEC graduates and vernacular school students lack proficiency in the Malay language.
The UEC is the Chinese independent high school examination equivalent to Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia.

Yesterday, Razman posted a video on Facebook with the caption: “Impossible for Malaysia to head towards national integration if the UEC is given a place in this nation.”
In the video, which depicted him on a phone call with an unnamed person, he said that a national identity would not emerge if UEC graduates were accepted into public universities.
Threat to Malay dominance
In an interview with Malaysiakini last week, he claimed that efforts to push UEC recognition could enable non-Malay communities to gain dominance in the country.
However, Bersatu leader Azmin Ali yesterday said that the issue of recognising the UEC should not be politicised.
The former Selangor menteri besar said he did not hesitate to grant recognition to the UEC during his tenure from 2014 to 2018.
Last year, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek stated that there are no plans to recognise the UEC citing its inconsistency with the national education policy and the provisions of the Education Act 1996.
