PAS MP says Azmin as PN sec-gen just a proposal

A PAS MP has described a news report indicating Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin as selecting Azmin Ali as the new coalition secretary-general as a “mere proposal”.

Pengkalan Chepa lawmaker Ahmad Marzuk Shaary said this was because the PN supreme council had yet to discuss the matter.

“It’s just a proposal, nothing decided. How to set things when the meeting is not conducted yet?” Marzuk (above) asked during a press conference at the Dewan Rakyat today.

In an interview with Sinar Harian recently, Muhyiddin mentioned that Azmin would be appointed as PN and Bersatu secretary-general.

Yesterday, PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden proposed that the party’s secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan replace Hamzah Zainudin as the new PN secretary-general.

Hamzah is now serving as Bersatu deputy president following his victory in the recently concluded party polls.

“This proposal aligns with the experience and seniority that Takiyuddin has within PN, especially since he previously served as the deputy secretary-general of PN,” Afnan was reported as saying.

According to the New Straits Times, Takiyuddin remained silent when quizzed on the matter.

"No reply is a good reply," the Kota Bharu MP was quoted as saying.

‘Wait for AGM’

In the same presser, Hulu Terengganu MP Rosol Wahid echoed Marzuk’s sentiments, adding that the new Bersatu secretary-general will only be announced during the party’s annual general assembly.

“And the PN meeting is scheduled on Dec 9. Perhaps, it was a proposal and the reporter had misquoted (Muhyiddin). Let’s wait for the AGM,” he stated.

Earlier, PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad dismissed a media report, quoting sources, claiming the Islamist party was against Azmin getting the post.

“Where did the report come from? The enemies? If it’s citing sources, no such thing. It’s just the devil’s whisper,” the Bagan Serai MP added.
