Mindef should establish 'digital regiment', MP suggests

PARLIAMENT | A parliamentarian today suggested the Defence Ministry establish a “digital regiment” to fend off cyber attacks and enrol e-sports players as part of the mechanism.

Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) said cyber warfare is a cross-border issue that can pose various types of risks to national security.

According to the MP, the establishment of such a regiment is necessary as a precautionary measure against cyber threats.

“Tenggara wants to suggest that a digital regiment be established. This will be proof of the government’s seriousness in fighting digital threats to national security by using the latest technology.

“We should enrol our youths or gamers who are interested in joining this regiment,” he said when debating the Supply Bill 2025 at committee level in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Manndzri said the government should make use of the country’s e-sports experts who have proven their capabilities in the industry.

He also suggested that the Armed Forces organise a league for e-games on war tactics to find talent, especially among youths.

“These people have high skills in handling gadgets, their fingers are fast.

“Perhaps we can make use of their talents not only for e-sports but also to enrol them in this digital regiment, and the Armed Forces can organise an esports league to scout for talents in war tactics."
