Former Penang deputy chief Minister II P Ramasamy was supposed to receive the “Peace Award” from the Wali Nanggoroe Aceh in Banda Aceh tonight.

However, the politician, who now heads the Urimai party, was informed by immigration officers that he had been blacklisted from travelling abroad.

In a statement, Urimai interim secretary Satees Muniandy said it is believed that the restriction was requested by MACC.

“When contacted, MACC stated that the restriction was issued under instructions from Putrajaya.

“It is further understood that MACC has been investigating the Penang Hindu Endowment Board since last week.

“However, Ramasamy has yet to be summoned for questioning. Despite this, MACC has imposed a travel ban on him,” he added.

Satees said Ramasamy has repeatedly stated his willingness to be investigated, not only by MACC but any relevant authorities.

“We have also been informed that certain individuals are actively targeting Ramasamy in this case.

“Is it now a crime to criticize the Madani government to the point where one is treated like a criminal?” he asked.

Satees pointed out that even individuals charged in court are allowed to leave the country with court approval.

“What is the basis for barring someone from leaving the country solely due to an ‘investigation’?” he asked.

According to Satees, the Wali Nanggoroe Aceh’s office had made all the necessary protocol arrangements to receive Ramasamy as their guest and to present him with the Peace Award.

“However, everything had to be cancelled at the last minute.

“We have expressed our regret to the Wali Nanggoroe’s office for not being able to honour the invitation tonight. We explained that our absence is due to Malaysian politics becoming more dictatorial under the current Madani regime,” he charged.
