MACC reiterates promise of fair, transparent probe of Sabah scandal

The MACC today reiterated its promise to conduct a fair and transparent investigation into the corruption scandal implicating Sabah state leaders.

“As I said, the investigation is ongoing and we will investigate fairly and professionally,” said MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki in a brief text message this morning.

However, he declined to comment further when pressed for more details about the probe.

Malaysiakini contacted Azam for his response to mounting pressures from various quarters, including political parties that want the authorities to act on the alleged corruption involving Sabah state assembly members who purportedly received bribes to support a mining prospecting licence.

On Tuesday, a whistleblower released seven videos implicating several Sabah lawmakers who were purportedly discussing bribes in exchange for supporting an application by the whistleblower for a licence.

This came on the heels of four other videos of the purported discussions that were released last month.

Following this, Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh called for the MACC to “clear the air” on the status of its investigation, including who is the target of the probe - whether it is the assemblypersons, the whistleblower, or both.

He also suggested Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor step aside if MACC believes there is merit in the corruption allegations against him or members of his administration.

Warisan, an opposition party in Sabah, also urged the anti-graft agency to remand those implicated to facilitate investigations.
