PN confirms Azmin appointment as sec-gen, despite PAS' lobbying

The Perikatan Nasional supreme council met yesterday evening and confirmed the appointments of six key positions, including secretary-general, women’s chief, information chief, and supreme council members.

Bersatu retained all the major positions, with Azmin Ali confirmed as the new secretary-general despite earlier lobbying by PAS leaders for the role to go to its secretary-general, Takiyuddin Hassan.

In a statement last night, Azmin said Bersatu had nominated three leaders to join the PN supreme council, aligning with the outcomes of the recent Bersatu election.

This includes Hamzah Zainudin, who was appointed PN deputy chairperson, replacing Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

The newly confirmed appointments are as follows:

• Deputy chairperson: Hamzah Zainudin

• Women’s chief: Mas Ermieyati Samsudin

• Secretary-general: Azmin Ali

• Information chief: Ahmad Faizal Azumu

• Supreme council members: Mohd Radzi Md Jidin, Ronald Kiandee

The meeting, chaired by Muhyiddin Yassin, was attended by coalition party presidents, including PAS’ Abdul Hadi Awang, Gerakan’s Dominic Lau, and MIPP’s Punithan Paramsiven.

The position of PN youth chief is held by PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden.

Gearing up for Sabah polls

Azmin also shared that the meeting discussed political developments in Sabah.

“It was decided that PN would contest the Sabah state election, expected to be held no later than November 2025,” he said.

“Sabah PN has been tasked with preparing and strategising for forming a new government in the state.”

The supreme council also approved the establishment of the Policy and Strategy Department to focus on strategic issues and action plans while conducting research on national affairs.

Azmin added that PN remains committed to assisting flood victims, including engaging in post-flood cleaning operations.
