Speak out against atrocities in Bangladesh, govt MPs urge Anwar

Several government backbenchers have urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to voice out against the atrocities committed against Hindus in Bangladesh.

RSN Rayer (Harapan–Jelutong) said the prime minister should speak out as there are reports quoting former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed Sheikh Mujibur Rahmah as saying that the nation’s interim government is committing violence against its minorities.

“Before this, when I asked the Dewan Rakyat about the atrocities committed in Palestine, the prime minister assured us that he would speak out against any nation committing violence and defend minorities across the world.

“So, I take this opportunity to appeal to the prime minister to intervene and pay attention to this matter,” Rayer (above, centre) said at a press conference at the Dewan Rakyat today.

Also present were V Ganabatirau (Harapan–Klang), S Kesavan (Harapan–Sungai Siput) and P Prabakaran (Harapan–Batu).

On Aug 5, Sheikh Hasina fled Bangladesh after deadly protests against her rule.

Subsequently, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was appointed as the nation’s interim leader. However, reports have emerged that minorities in the country are now under attack, especially the Hindus.

On Aug 14, Anwar reached out to Yunus, adding the latter has assured that the rights of all Bangladeshis, including minorities, will be protected.

“Yunus has long-standing good ties with Malaysia. Thus, I assured him that Malaysia stands ready to help and support the interim government in rebuilding and restoring peace and security in Bangladesh.

“I am very pleased that Yunus has given his assurances to protect the rights of all Bangladeshis including minorities,” he added.
