A brawl involving two groups of football fans at the Bandar Tasik Selatan LRT station late last night caused disruptions to train services and damage to public property.

While police did not identify the football fans, the brawl occurred after Malaysia failed to progress beyond the Asean Cup group stage after drawing with Singapore 0-0 during the final Group A match at the Bukit Jalil stadium.

Cheras district police chief Aidil Bolhassan said the incident began with a verbal altercation between the groups as they exited a train from Bukit Jalil to Sentul Timur.

“It started with a verbal altercation between two groups of supporters, which escalated into a physical fight,” Aidil said in a statement.

The confrontation, involving an estimated 20 to 30 individuals, became worse as trash bins and lift door barriers were hurled.

In addition, train doors were kicked, resulting in the train’s glass doors getting damaged and an eight-minute halt to its service.

Police and auxiliary officers intervened, dispersing the crowd and escorting the supporters safely out of the station.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing and the police encouraged witnesses to come forward with any relevant information.

‘Maintain decorum, sportsmanship’

In response, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli urged fans to maintain decorum and sportsmanship.

“We have yet to receive a full report on the incident, as to whether or not it is related to or caused by the match last night.

“However, we hope that every fan out there will always maintain the true spirit of Ekor Harimau Malaya, who is widely regarded as some of the best supporters in the region and the world,” Adam said in a statement.

He stressed that the ministry has a clear policy of not condoning any reckless or violent behaviour in sports - whether among athletes or fans.

“While we understand that fans can be emotional at times and we appreciate their passion, it is not an excuse for any form of actions that may be deemed excessive,” Adam said while urging fans to uphold respect and sportsmanship.
