UM interdicts lecturer who 'sent nudes' to students

Universiti Malaya has interdicted a lecturer implicated in sending nude photographs of himself to students.

In a statement today, the university said the measure was taken under the Statutory Bodies (Discipline and Surcharge) Act 2000.

“Universiti Malaya will continue to ensure that its campus environment remains safe and conducive, including taking firm action against any party involved in misconduct, regardless of their position or status,” it said.

The university did not disclose further details about the incident or the identity of the lecturer but reiterated its commitment to upholding a zero-tolerance policy on misconduct within its community.

Under Section 45 of the Statutory Bodies (Discipline and Surcharge) Act 2000, an officer may be interdicted from their duties (ie being barred from coming to work) for up to two months pending an investigation for a criminal offence or a serious disciplinary offence.

An officer interdicted under Section 45 is entitled to full pay.

In contrast, those interdicted due to criminal proceedings in court are entitled to only half pay, while those who have been suspended shall receive no pay.

This move follows the UM Feminism Club’s demand that UM conduct an investigation and take firm action against an academic staff member accused of sexual harassment by sending nude photos to students.

The club submitted a memorandum urging UM administrators to take immediate action against the academic, who holds the status of professor.

On Dec 21, the Higher Education Ministry stated that it takes any issue involving misconduct and violations by staff of higher education institutions seriously.

On Dec 18, UM announced that it was investigating allegations that a lecturer had sent nude photos to several students.
