No criminal element in UiTM cadet's death - S'gor police chief

There have been no criminal elements found in the death of UiTM Reserve Officer Training Unit (Rotu) cadet Muhammad Amir Rusyaidi.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan told a press conference that the victim had died of heat stroke with multi-organ failure.

“The investigation classified as a sudden death report (SDR) was referred to the deputy public prosecutor and it was determined there was no offence committed by any party,” he was quoted as saying by The Star.

The investigation concluded after the statements of 64 people were recorded, he added.

Previously, Malaysiakini reported that Amir died on Nov 13 after allegedly undergoing an extremely exhausting training session on Nov 10.

The victim’s father filed a police report alleging that his son was abused, including being stomped on the chest, forced to move like a horse, ridden by the trainer, and ordered to jump like a kangaroo.

The 25-year-old cadet collapsed after the training and remained in a coma until his death.

A Rotu trainer claimed he was being made a scapegoat in the case.

Meanwhile, Hussein said the initial investigation revealed that Amir joined the UiTM Rotu in October last year and was undergoing a fitness test before commencing basic training this year.

“On the day of the incident, the student was punished by his trainer for falling behind during a run. He was made to do push-ups.

“Soon after, he lost consciousness,” Hussein said.

High temperature, cramps

Amir was half-awake and recorded a high body temperature throughout his treatment.

Hospital staff attempted to hydrate him, but this did not affect his state positively, said the state police chief.

“The student was also suffering from cramps and was given further treatment before being admitted to the intensive care unit.

“He passed away on Nov 13.”

Besides the police investigation, the military also vowed to probe the case thoroughly and take further action.

Amir’s death led to UiTM promising to review its Rotu programme.
