Cops reject Jan 6 protest application, say it's incomplete

Putrajaya district police chief Aidi Sham Mohamed said the police had rejected Umno’s application to hold a rally on Jan 6 outside the Court of Appeal under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

“The police did receive an application from the organiser on Dec 31.

“Upon checking, we found the application incomplete and had rejected it. Organisers were informed of it on Jan 3,” he told Malaysiakini today.

When asked about PAS pressing ahead with the rally, Aidi said his team has yet to receive an application from the Islamist party.

Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced that his party has called off its rally slated for Jan 6 for former premier Najib Abdul Razak, who would be attending a court hearing regarding the purported royal addendum allowing him to serve his remaining prison sentence at home.

This comes after a decree from Istana Negara on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s pardon prerogative and a warning from the inspector-general of police not to attend the rally.

However, PAS has indicated that it would press ahead with the rally.

“The solidarity rally is about defending Agong’s powers and prerogative from being manipulated, apart from supporting Najib’s efforts to get justice under the same principles.

“As such, PAS has no plans to revise our earlier call to our members in regard to the peaceful rally scheduled on the same day, time and place mentioned,” its secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan was reported as saying.

Perkasa president Syed Hassan Syed Ali also stated that around 5,000 Malay NGOs and individuals are expected to attend the rally.

“(We believe) all Malay NGOs will show their support. Around 5,000 NGOs and individuals are expected to attend on Monday,” he said.
