Single father of 3 lands in prison for banana theft

Summary

• Widower and father of three gets three months in jail for stealing bananas from a farm.

• The act by the 35-year-old lorry attendant was captured on CCTV at the farm.

The Magistrate’s Court in Batu Pahat, Johor, has sentenced a 35-year-old father of three to three months in prison for stealing bananas from a farm.

Magistrate Nurasidah A Rahman delivered the ruling after Muhammad Fadil Ismail, a widower and lorry attendant, pleaded guilty to the charge.

The incident occurred on Jan 4 at 9.45am when the farm owner, a 56-year-old man, noticed thefts of his prized “rastali” bananas had become frequent.

According to the New Straits Times, he had installed a CCTV camera on his property, which captured Fadil cutting down a banana tree and making off with the fruit.

The footage led the farm owner to file a police report the same day.

Authorities arrested Fadil shortly thereafter, and an investigation confirmed his involvement in the thefts.

Deputy public prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip and inspector Ling Shao Shen led the prosecution, while Fadil was represented by Kamarularifin Nordin from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

The charge carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both.

This case is reminiscent of another banana theft incident in May last year when a 44-year-old unemployed man in Terengganu was sentenced to 30 days in prison for stealing a bunch of bananas from a senior citizen’s house.
