The son of a minister accused of threatening his lover to get an abortion had secretly married his alleged victim last year, according to police.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said police had verified his marriage certificate from a neighbouring country as being legitimate.

Previously, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had indicated that the man being investigated was his son and that there would not be any preferential treatment.

In a press conference today, Razarudin (above) said the marriage had taken place in September, and that they had wanted to hide it from their family and friends due to some “objections”.

“When this case happened, their friends didn’t know... they didn’t want to make this a big deal because they were afraid their families would be upset,” Razarudin was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

He did not say what the objections to the marriage were.

Previously, a purported report was widely shared on social media, in which a minister’s son allegedly threatened a woman he impregnated to get an abortion.

He also allegedly tried to kick her in the stomach.

The report alleged that the man refused to “take responsibility” for the pregnancy.

Razarudin said today that police are still waiting for the deputy public prosecutor’s office to get back to them on further instructions.
