Former deputy law minister Mohamed Hanipa Maidin criticised Umno leader Mohd Puad Zarkashi after the latter chided him for asking Amanah president Mohamad Sabu to quit.
In a sharp rebuttal, Hanipa, who was Amanah’s Sepang MP, said he would not take seriously the views of anyone who defends former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak.
“When I asked the Amanah president to resign, an Umno leader condemned me and defended him.
“I can reply to his condemnation but why should I? Anyone who does not hesitate to defend or support Najib, in my view, should not be taken seriously,” Hanipa (above) said on Facebook today.
Yesterday, Hanipa challenged Mohamad to resign if the government prevents the anti-corruption rally slated for Jan 25.
“I have spent a significant part of my life as a defence lawyer representing Mohamad, particularly in cases involving his right to peaceful assembly.
“At times, I was even arrested for defending his rights,” Hanipa had said.
However, Puad took umbrage to Hanipa’s views and said the call for Mohamad to resign was outdated political manoeuvring.
“I am confident Hanipa would not have resigned if an anti-corruption rally was held during his tenure as deputy law minister.
“His demand for Mat Sabu to resign as a minister is irrelevant. This is old-school politics when someone no longer holds office,” the Umno supreme council member said.
