Setia Alam mall shooting suspect killed in police raid

Police have shot dead a man linked to the recent shooting in a shopping mall in Setia Alam during a raid at a hotel on Pulau Ketam, near Port Klang.

During the 3am raid by the Criminal Investigation Departments of Selangor and Bukit Aman today, a shootout occurred between police officers and the suspect.

“The police team managed to shoot a male citizen, aged around his mid-30s,” said Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan in a statement.

Hussein (above) added that the man had nine criminal records, including seven robberies and one drug-related offence.

Police also found two loaded firearms in the hotel room.

According to a Berita Harian report, the suspect’s body will be brought to the jetty at Port Klang after the investigation.

On Feb 8, a man believed to be under the influence of drugs fired four shots in a shopping mall in Setia Alam, injuring a cleaner, after being told to move his belongings.

It was reported that the victim was a migrant in his 30s who was injured in the back and legs. He was rushed to the Shah Alam Hospital for treatment and remains stable.

After the shooting, the suspect fled from the mall while firing off several more shots and forced a driver to drive him out of the area at gunpoint, eventually being dropped off near the Kesas highway in Shah Alam.

Serial criminal ‘Ah Boy’

Meanwhile, Hussein explained that the suspect committed a series of crimes after fleeing the mall until he was killed today.

The suspect, known as “Ah Boy”, first fled to the south of the country before returning to Selangor by threatening e-hailing and lorry drivers, as well as stealing a motorcycle to travel to his destination.

“After the incident at the shopping mall, he fled from Klang to Malacca and stayed there for five days before turning back to Banting and two days ago he was spotted in Sabak Bernam.

“In Sabak Bernam, he managed to commit housebreaking, brandishing a firearm, and also robbery before fleeing to Pulau Ketam, bringing the total number of crimes committed by the suspect to 15,” he said at a press conference at Pulau Ketam Jetty here today.

Hussein said the suspect had been active in committing crimes since 2014 and had been jailed twice for robbery, with most cases committed solo and in small groups, in addition to being identified as having firearms since last year.

“We are also investigating whether he used Pulau Ketam as a transit point before fleeing abroad and investigations are also being carried out to trace where he obtained the weapons,” he said.

Regarding the shooting case at the mall, the Selangor police chief said they did not rule out the possibility that the suspect was planning to commit a robbery.
