'Why would I be naked?' Singer fumes as scammers use fake nude photo

Singer Jaclyn Victor said she is lodging a police report after a doctored image of her purportedly in the nude and escorted by police was used in a phishing scam online.

Phishing is when online users are tricked into clicking through to a page in order to take their personal information and other details as part of a scam.

“I’m going to the police station! This is really getting out of hand and pissing me off already. Also, why would I be naked?” she said in an Instagram post alerting her followers of the scam.

The image used by the scammers was made out to look like a news article, with the headline: “Jacyln Victor: Following the interview, banks have taken little action. The procedure is ongoing.”

It is also tagged as “Top 10 news in Malaysia”.

The image showed her in the nude and seemingly distressed, but some parts of her body were pixelated and covered with the words “censored”.

It appeared as sponsored posts on various social media platforms, including YouTube.

Other celebrity victims

Phishing scams have frequently used the likeness of celebrities to trick online users into clicking through to malicious websites.

Some well-known figures whose likenesses have been used include activist and the daughter of a former prime minister, Marina Mahathir, and comedian Douglas Lim.

Last month, Lim shared about a phishing attempt using his likeness, which came with the purported headline: “The whole country is in shock, this is a very sad day for all of Malaysia. Goodbye, Douglas Lim.”

Raising awareness in comedic fashion, Lim shared the image and asked his followers if anyone knew what had happened to him, because he, too, would like to know.
