Loke tells rail operators to improve safety following blind man's death

Transport Minister Anthony Loke has instructed all rail station operators to improve and upgrade their safety aspects, especially when it comes to facilitating the disabled community.

This came after a blind man was found dead on the train tracks at the Titiwangsa station - run by Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd - in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

“Prasarana (Malaysia Bhd) will take several important steps to ensure such incidents won’t happen again.

“Smart CCTVs, which are equipped to detect risky behaviours, will be installed at their stations.

“In the long run, Prasarana is installing platform screen doors at all LRT routes to improve passengers’ safety,” Loke said on Facebook today.

Earlier today, the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) operations centre, as well as Sentul district police, identified the deceased as a blind Chinese man.

KL FRD operations commander Fadil Hesam Mohd said teams from the Sentul and Titiwangsa fire stations were dispatched to the scene based on an emergency call received at 8.38am through the MERS-999 system.

“Further checks found the victim was blind, and based on initial investigations, it is believed the victim fell on the tracks before being hit by a passing train.

“The incident is believed to have happened due to the victim’s loss of balance, without being noticed by the train driver,” he was reported as saying.

Safe and inclusive

On that note, Loke urged all train passengers who require additional assistance, especially from the disabled community, to approach Prasarana personnel or auxiliary police.

“The safety and welfare of passengers remains a priority to us.

“And the government is committed to ensuring our public transport system remains safe, inclusive and user-friendly to benefit all Malaysians,” he added.
