Former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob left the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya at about 3pm today after spending more than four hours answering investigators’ questions regarding alleged corruption linked to the “Keluarga Malaysia” government project.
Lawyer Ragunath Kesavan told Malaysiakini that the statement recording session will continue tomorrow, where Ismail Sabri is expected to meet the investigating officers again at 10am.
“He has just left (MACC headquarters). Will continue tomorrow at 10am,” he said in a brief text message.
Kesavan, whose firm is representing Ismail Sabri, however, declined to comment when asked for further details on today’s questioning.
In a statement later, Ismail Sabri pledged full cooperation to aid the investigation.
“I went to the MACC headquarters to provide a statement, and I will continue to cooperate with the authorities until the investigation is complete,” said the Bera MP.
Earlier today, Bernama reported that Ismail Sabri arrived at MACC headquarters at 9.46am to give his statement on a probe into a corruption and money laundering case linked to him.
The ninth prime minister was supposed to give his statement on March 7 but postponed it to today due to his health condition.
He was rushed to a private medical centre on Feb 22 after collapsing at his home.
On March 3, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki reportedly said Ismail Sabri was a suspect in the investigation following the discovery of about RM170 million in various currencies in a safe house.
Also seized were 16kg of gold bars estimated to be worth almost RM7 million.
The MACC also froze 13 bank accounts containing over RM2 million to assist in the investigation.
The focus of the investigation is on the expenditure and acquisition of funds for the “Keluarga Malaysia” campaign as part of promotional and publicity purposes while he was leading the country.
