PKR election candidates list to be finalised today

The PKR election committee will unveil the final list of candidates today who are eligible to contest in the party's upcoming election.

PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said the final list was determined after the objection and appeal process, which took place from March 20 to 25, was completed.

“For this election, the election committee will announce today the names of candidates eligible to contest at the division level and so on.

“For the central level, it (the polls) will be held on May 25, while the division-level elections will take place between April 11 and 20,” she said at a press conference in Kuantan, Pahang, today.

The PKR election committee is chaired by Dr Zaliha Mustafa.

Earlier, Fuziah, who is also the deputy minister of domestic trade and cost of living, officiated the Rahmah Madani sales programme at the Pantai Sepat fishermen’s market near Kuantan.

When asked about the high number of nominations for division chief positions in Kelantan, she said this was a normal process and that the nominations were not yet final in terms of eligibility to contest.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that the PKR branch chief positions in Kelantan were highly contested, despite the party serving as the opposition in the state.

A total of 44 candidates are vying for the position across 14 divisions in Kelantan.

A Malaysiakini check found that the Machang division recorded the highest participation, with six candidates vying to become its division chief.

Meanwhile, Kota Bharu, Pasir Mas, Kubang Kerian, and Bachok divisions will each see four-cornered fights for the position.

As of the nomination deadline on March 16, PKR had received over 17,500 nominations for various party positions in this election.

Use of AI

In a related development, Fuziah expressed satisfaction with the nomination process and hoped that the electronic voting system, which incorporates AI elements, would run smoothly.

“We are trying to fully implement the e-voting system, but we must also consider party members who lack internet access, live in rural areas with limited connectivity, or are over 60 years old.

“Therefore, manual voting will still be available, and this will be managed by the election committee,” she added.
