Chang to defend PKR vice-president post at party polls

SUMMARY

• PKR vice-president Chang Lih Kang will defending his position at the party’s upcoming elections.

• The science, technology and innovation minister stressed that he has remained loyal to the party despite its struggles.

PKR vice-president Chang Lih Kang has announced his intention to defend his position in the party’s election set to take place in May.

Chang, who is also the science, technology, and innovation minister, said the Pakatan Harapan component party needs leaders who are not just riding on success but have proven their commitment to the party’s struggles.

“I myself have experienced the rise and fall of this party. We have been at the lowest point (and) been betrayed.

“Yet, I remain loyal to the party because I am convinced that PKR is the party of the future,” he said in a statement today.

Chang is the latest party leader to announce his candidacy for the post.

Previously, PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the communications minister, said he would be vying for the position, with the decision made after discussions with party leaders, colleagues, and grassroots members.

Besides Chang, three other incumbents have also stated their resolve to defend their vice-president posts - Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, and Nurul Izzah Anwar.

The remaining two incumbents - Deputy National Unity Minister K Saraswathy and former Putatan MP Awang Husaini Sahari - have yet to reveal whether or not they will be in the race to retain their positions.

The PKR central leadership council has nine vice-president positions, four of which are elected positions and three are appointed by the president after the party election.

The other two positions are ex-officio positions for the chiefs of its Youth and Women’s wings.
