6 UN agencies sound alarm over humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Several UN agencies have issued an urgent call for international action in response to the rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, reported German news agency dpa.

In a joint statement released on Monday, the heads of six United Nations organisations - including the World Food Programme, Unicef and the World Health Organization - warned that no commercial or humanitarian aid has entered Gaza for more than a month due to the ongoing Israeli blockade.

"More than 2.1 million people are trapped, bombed and starved again, while, at crossing points, food, medicine, fuel and shelter supplies are piling up, and vital equipment is stuck," the statement read.

The agencies highlighted data showing that over 1,000 children were killed or injured in the first week following the collapse of the most recent ceasefire - the highest weekly toll since the start of the conflict.

Gaza’s healthcare system, the statement added, is on the verge of collapse, functioning only partially and lacking vital medical and surgical supplies. Years of humanitarian progress are now at risk of being undone.

"We are witnessing acts of war in Gaza that show an utter disregard for human life," the statement continued.

New Israeli evacuation orders have again forced hundreds of thousands to flee their homes, leaving virtually no place of safety in the densely populated coastal strip, the statement said.
