Cops nab teen over alleged sale of doctored indecent images in Johor

Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy to facilitate investigations into the distribution of indecent doctored images involving students of a high school in Kulai, Johor.

Johor police chief M Kumar said the youth was picked up yesterday by a team at a location in Kulai, at about 5pm.

The team also seized a handphone, which they believe was used by the suspect to doctor images taken from victims' social media accounts.

"Initial questioning revealed that the suspect had (allegedly) edited photos taken from victims' social media accounts using an artificial intelligence (AI) application.

"The suspect is currently under a four-day remand until April 12 to facilitate further investigations," he said in a statement.

Police have so far received nine reports from victims.

The first report was lodged by an 18-year-old girl last week (April 3), who found that obscene photos, doctored using her facial image, were being sold online.

According to Kumar, the suspect allegedly sold the doctored images for RM2 each.

Don’t distribute victims’ photos

The cases are being investigated under Section 292 of the Penal Code (distribution/exhibition of obscene materials) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (abuse of network facilities).

"Any individual who has fallen victim (to this activity) is advised to come forward by lodging a report at the nearest police station," Kumar said, adding that the public should not spread the victims' photos on social media.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported about indecent doctored images of students and alumni from Foon Yew High School in Kulai, Johor, being spread online.

According to media reports, a female student claimed on social media that a male classmate had used photo editing technology to create indecent images of her and shared them in a chat group for profit.
