Speaking at PAS Kelantan’s Hari Raya open house in Kota Bharu yesterday, Nassuruddin (above) stressed that everyone - especially parents - bears a duty to protect themselves and their families from moral decline.
“We have done our best, but if parents fail to monitor their children, these efforts will be hard to realise.
“Each individual must safeguard themselves and their family members from the fires of hell,” PAS’ official mouthpiece Harakahdaily quoted him as saying.
He added that the state government has implemented numerous educational programmes in mosques, surau and schools to address the issue.
His remarks came in the wake of police data showing a worrying rise in rape and incest cases in Kelantan.
Worrying rise of cases
According to Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat, 252 cases were recorded in 2024 - a 22.3 percent increase from 206 cases in 2023 - with many involving consensual relationships.
More alarmingly, some of the perpetrators were as young as 10 years old.
In a special press conference on April 9, Yusoff cited family conflict, parental neglect, underage relationships and easy access to pornographic content via mobile phones as among the contributing factors.
“This is not just a police responsibility. It requires a whole-of-society approach, involving the education system, community leaders, imams, village heads and parents,” he said.
Clarifying his position, Nassuruddin said his comments were not meant to imply the state government was shirking responsibility.
He said social issues - including sexual crimes - were being taken seriously by the administration.
“These problems aren’t confined to Kelantan alone. But we’re committed to addressing them.
“We hope parents will be more attentive when raising their children, especially since most of their time is spent at home,” he added.

Proof that a religious political sect of narrow ideology cannot manage and develop moral society needs of the community they have been in charge of for generations. Yet the very same sect rails against the liberal west and liberal states in Malaysia as being the source of all evil. At least in those liberal societies, the issues of moral ill are out in the open for all to see with government and community working together to resolve and improve. It is not perfect as we are human but the stats don’t lie with the type of multi generational society that has devolved in Kelantan being the worst of moral deprivation. If there was ever a case why PAS can never ever be in charge of Malaysia, then this is it.
