PKR polls: Anwar submits nomination, coy on Izzah's bid

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today sidestepped reporters’ questions on whether his daughter Nurul Izzah will contest the PKR deputy president post.

When pressed on the matter this afternoon, Anwar, who is PKR president, instead quipped that he also has not filled the nomination form to defend the position.

“I also haven’t filled (the form).

“The (contest for) party president is still nil. It (the list of candidates) is still empty.

“I will do it later,” he said when met by reporters after having lunch in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.

It was learned that Anwar has since submitted his nomination form. A check by Malaysiakini later in the afternoon found that his name had appeared on the candidates' list.

PKR is having its central leadership election during the party’s national congress later this month.

Leaders intending to contest have until 11.59pm tonight to submit their nominations.

As of last night, a check by Malaysiakini found that no nominations had been submitted for the deputy president post.

Speculations have been rife on whether Nurul Izzah would enter the contest for the deputy presidency, a position that is being held by Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli.

This comes after a huge number of PKR branches from around the country voiced their support for her to run for the position.

Rafizi had since confirmed that he will defend his deputy presidency, and expressed his openness to being challenged by Nurul Izzah, a PKR vice-president, and former PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
