Two people were killed and 17 others injured after a Mexican ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, according to Reuters, with two of those hurt in critical condition.

New York mayor Eric Adams was quoted as saying that the vessel, known as the Cuauhtemoc, lost power before the crash on Saturday evening.

A total of 277 people were on board the training ship, which was on a goodwill visit, when the incident occurred.

The bridge itself did not experience major damage and was open to traffic after a preliminary inspection, the report added.

The vessel is 91m and 12m wide, according to the Mexican navy.
